OBITUARY.
MRS. JOHN DAVIES. News of the death of All’s Hannah Jane Davies, relict of the late Air John Davies, will be received with deep regret by both the older and younger generation of residents of this district (says the Levin Chronicle). Airs Davies had been ill for many months, and a fatal termination to her indisposition was not unexpected. She was one of the earliest settlers in this district. Born in Wellington in 1849, the daughter of the late Air Charles Howe, of Howe’s Farm, she came to the Horn wlienua fifty-six years ago and was married when twenty-one years of age, living with her husband first in the Wirokino and later at Koputaroa, then known as Kereru. Those were the days before the railways and roads and the means of access were by the old beach route and by boat to Foxton. The late Airs Davies took her full share of the toil and hardships inseparable from tlie life of the pioneers, but through it all preserved her kindliness of heart and earned the respect and goodwill of a very wide circle of friends. Later Airs Davies came to live in Levin, where a great many people will have reason to remember her quiet generosity and readiness to help in cases of distress and hardship. The members of the family will have very general sympathy in their bereavement. These include her son, Air Fred. Davies, of Heatherica, and her nieces, Aliss Johnson, of Levin; Airs D. Gilchrist, of Wellington; and Airs A. Orwin, of Auckland; while.Mr J. C. Johnson, of Koputaroa, is a nephew. There is one surviving brother, Air George Howje, of Wellington. The funeral takes place in Levin to-morrow.
