HOOLIGANISM AT THE SEASIDE
A resident of the seaside informs us that unless some steps are taken to make an example of a gang of young hooligans who frequent the seaside, the place will soon become unsafe for young women. These “young bloods” make themselves objectionable by passing rude and insulting remarks to young women who happen to be taking a walk and when any social function is on at the hall they increase their license by practical jokes and horse play worthy of the notorious “Sydney push.” The other evening they played pranks with the lights in the hall, amusing their dull wits by switching theyi off. As a result of a remonstrance it is alleged that a Beach visitor was severely dealt with, having a couple of ribs fractured and an eye cut open. If the above information is correct, then it is time steps were taken to see that the law Is not a dead letter at the seaside. UGLY INCIDENT AT CHRISTCHURCH. Chistchureh, Last Night. The weather on New Year’s Eve was very fine, and the streets were crowded. The larrikin element was a good deal in evidence, and there was an ugly incident at about 1.30 a.m. when a young man was arrested for fighting in Cathedral Square. A crowd followed the police to the station, where they made a noisy demonstration and “counted out” the policemen for over an hour until they were dispersed by a combined rush of police.
