SECRET BALLOTS
“SHAMEFUL AND CORRUPT.” UNION MEMBER’S OPINION. In opening the introduction of a secret, ballot for electing the officers of the Bendigo branch of the Australian Railways’ Union, and delegates to the annual conference, Mr S. McKinnon said that after 20 years’ experience of branch elections lie described some of them as “shameful and diabolically corrupt.” If the election by a secret ballot could be done honestly it would, of course, he the demorcatic method; hut that was not so. He could relate instances of corruption in conducting ballots in branch elections that would astound members. It was decided by a large majority that the election of officers should be by a 'secret ballot. Mr McKinnon, v, lio had earlier in the meeting been nominated for secretary and other executive positions thereupon withdrew his nomination.
