ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

Pahiatua, December 18. A motor accident occurred at Campbell’s Gull} - , Kaitawa, Hinemoa road yesterday afternoon, Air J. J. France, postmaster at Eketahuna, being seriously injured and now lying in a critical, condition in the- local hospital. 'the car went over a bank. The other occupants were Alessrs H. Scott, post office chaffeur, Wellington, and AI. AlcGill, senior clerk, general Post Office, Wellington. The formey received a flesh wound in the thigh and the latter a few bruises. It was a very wet day and at a dangerous bend the steering gear failed to respond. Air AlcGill had been sent out by the Department to take an independent ballot of settlers regarding the Pahiatua-Eke-tahuna rural delivery. Christchurch, December 18. Gertrude H. Rudd, a married woman, of Spreydon, died in the hospital as a result of being thrown from a bicycle in a collision with a milk cart driven by a fifteen-year-old girl. Alasterton, December 18. George Harding Innes, a middleaged fanner and prominent' settler of the East Coast was found dead near the Whakataki public.hall this evening. He is believed to have been dead for 24 hours. Deceased was till recntly chairman of th Castlepoint County Council and he had been under medical supervision for some time.

A wliare in the Pongaroa township, owned and occupied by Thomas Brannigan, an elderly man, and a well-known carrier for many years past on the Makuri-Pongaroa road was destroyed by Are at an early hour on Thursday morning (says the Pahiatua Hei’ald). Subsequently the ehaiTed remains of Brannigan Were found by the Pongaroa police among the debris. The actual cause of the fire is not known. Brannigan it was stated, was subject to heart attacks.- The fire was discovered between 3 and 4 a.m. by a Postal employee named Palmer, who instantly gave the alarm. An adjoining shed in which was stored a car belonging to Air H. Sounness was also destroyed. Ther was a small insurance on the ear.
