SHANNON BRIDGE.

OLD SITE TO BE ABANDONED

A letter received by tbe Horowhenna County Council from the Public Works Department at Saturday’s meeting, makes it clear that the idea of repairing the damaged Manawatu bridge on the ShannonFoxton road has been definitely abe.ndoned, and that a new structure will eventually be constructed at the No. 2 site as embodied in the report of the engineers who considered the question last year. Tentative proposals for the allocation of the cost of temporary accommodation wore also forwarded.

The District Engineer (Mr .T. Hannah) wrote that the Public Works Department had decided to instal a punt below the wrecked bridge on Hie Xhannon-FV>xton road, and that as no suitable punt could be procured in Wellington, a contract for the building of one in sections, which would be assembled at Shannon. had been let at a cost of £550.

'fhe total cost of providing temporary traffic facilities would be approximately £750 which they suggested should be divided as follows:

Main Highways Board £250 ITorowhenua County £l5O Manawatu County £2OO Shannon Borough Council £IOO Foxton Borough £SO

They wrote iurtlier that the Main Hiyhways Board had decided to abandon the idea of again using the existing bridge in its present position, and suggested that all the necessary information be obtained as soon as possible so that the existing bridge might be ultimately moved to No. 5 site, near the mouth of (lie Tokoniaru stream.

The chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) stated that the necessary action had been taken and the punt was now being assembled on the river bank. The allocation of the cost of the [Hint seemed to be a reasonable one and could lie safely endorsed by the Council. Cr. Whyte asked what would be (lie position of the road necessitataled by the shifting of the Shannon bridge to the No. 3 site. The chairman stated that the road would be gazetted a Main Highway and the cost would be allocated between the local bodies and the Board.
