BOARD TO MANAGE N.Z. RAILWAYS.

GENERAL MANAGER RETIRES. Wellington, Last Night. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways, when seen to-day concerning the reorganisation of the management of New Zealand Railways, stated that lie had come to the conclusion some time ago that on the retirement of Mr R. W. McVilly. a hoard of management, consisting of three, would prove the most satisfactory form of management- to cope with the existing problems. “The question of Mr AfcVilly’s retirement,” continued Mr Coates, “was deferred at my request until the completion of the Commission report. This has now been received by the Government and Mr McVilly’s active association with the Department terminated ou Friday last.” Mr F. J. Jones has been appointed chairman of the Board. Mr Jones lias held the position of chief engineer since the retirement of Mr McLean, and will carry on in his new capacity as head of the Department pneding the appointment of the two remaining members of the board. I expect to make further statements in this regard in the course of a day or two.” Mr McVilly has had an exceptionally long period of services and was entitled to retire on superannuation some time ago. He declined to discuss the matter when approached on the subject.
