FOXTON CHORAL SOCIETY.

INAUGURAL CONCERT

The inaugural concert of the-Fox-ton Choral Society took place in the Town Hall last night, before a keenly appreciative audience. The attendance was disappointing, due, possibly, to the number of attractions and calls on a limited public during the past two months. It is hoped that this fact will not dishearten the society in its efforts to create and develop a love for vocal harmony and the study of the works of some of our great composers. An indication of what the members are capable of doing was evidenced last night in the splendid interpretations of the part songs, which called forth unstinted applause and appreciation. The numbers were “London Town” (Edward German), “Weary Wind of the West” (Edward Elgar), ‘‘The Lee Shore.” (Coleridge Taylor) and the “Viking Song” (Taylor). These items not only reflected credit upon the society, but indicated careful preparation. A little more body in male voices was lacking to give a true balance to an otherwise excellent rendering. The society’s items were interspersed with vocal items by some of Palmerston’s Reading vocalists, .who were all accorded flattering receptions and recalls. The visiting Vocalists were Mrs Fergie, Misses Whalley, Blockley, Messrs Hubble, MeCleary and Whitehorn. The concert, as a whole, was of a particularly high standard of merit. Mr H. Osborne, the society’s conductor, was the recipient of flattering commendations upon the society’s efforts. The accompaniments were played by Miss Delany and Mrs Gilmour.

During the evening, the Mayor (Mr Chrystall,) spoke appreciatively of the society’s efforts and wished them continued success. He also paid a fine tribute to the other performers.
