While proceeding'along Mountain road near Inglewood, yesterday, a lorry with a load of l(i() eases of benzine caught lire, and was totally destroyed. Traffic was blocked on the road for an Inmr or two. The cause of the lire is unknown. While out with a party in a boat, on the Waikato river an enginedriver of Mercer, William Mallard, aged 97, a married man, was shot in the side owing to a pea-rifle accidentally discharging. The bullet struck one of Mr Mallard's ribs. Tl is not generally known that Ihe King is the owner of a public house. This is situated in the village of Dorsingliam, on the Sandringham Estate, and bears (lie appropriate name of “The Feathers.” It is a typical little village hostelry, and is much visited during the summer months. Miss B. Fenwick, aged 105, housekeeper to Mr W. Harrington, aged 94, of Tiptree, Essex, found her employer dead in his chair when she went downstairs to begin her duties one morning recently.

Thomas Tatisey, licensee of the Excelsior Hotel, Christchurch, was lined £lO on each of three charges of selling liquor after hours. The police staled that the hotel had a reputation for that sort of thing.
