DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
TDEPARTMENT HANGING FIRE. TELEGRAM TO DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION. At last night’s school committee meeting, the headmaster (Air Mason) asked for information in connection with the proposal to establish a District High School at Foxton. He said there were sufficient pupils for the purpose and that it was unfair that pupils requiring secondary education should be compelled to travel daily to Palmerston N. Parents objected to their children travelling daily bv train and others could not afford to pay boarding fees. He saw no reason why the Department should wit-hold the right to establish a secondary- school in Foxton. The Chairman (Air J. K. HomUow) said a petition had been forwarded to the Board by parents of children entitled to secondary education, for the establishment of a District High School at Foxton and (lie Board had endorsed the application and forwarded the application on to Hi* Department, who, in turn, had asked for further information. All the committee could do was to advise the number of pupils offering. No pupils’ could be expected from Oroua Downs or Rangiotu who could more conveniently attend the Palmerston N. High school. In company- with Mr J. Link-later, ALP., lie had waited upon the Minister for Education on the subject and urged the claims of Foxton sin this connection. The Alinister said lie was ignorant of any application » having been made and said he would inquire into the matter. No further word had been, received from the Department on the subject. It was decided to send a telegram to the Director oif Education forthwith! This morning the following telegram was dispatched to the Director of Education: —“Wlmt steps being taken re establishment District High School Foxton. Committee and Board sanctioned application months ago. Great inconvenience incurred in sending pupils Palmerston X. Can you personally visit and conier with " Committee before holidays; Matter urgent. —Hornblow, Chairman.”
