BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT. During the month the following works have been carried out: Connecting one householder with the high pressure water supply and extending four services. Twenty-eight hours work was done at the gas works. Complaints, enquiries and maintenance work in connection with the water and drainage and by-laws have been attended to. During the month there has been two fires; the extra pressure lias been applied to the mains on both occasions, everything holding satisfactorily. Pumping Station Report: Maintenance cost totalled £l4 8/1, and'was made up as follows: Coal, lton PJ ewt„ £5 11/9, oil, IJ. gallons, fi/-, wages £7 19/4, miscellaneous 11/-. Seventy-five hours were spent pumping, 820.000 gallons being pumped at a cost of 4Jd per 1,000 gallons. Water Works Maintenance: £3 1/9, Drainage do. (manhole inspection, etc.) £1 11/11, general (ranging, by-laws, etc.) £3 13/4, No. hours outside work carried on, 56, producing £5 16/8. — Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the past month, the following work was carried out by the road staff: Mixing asphalt in Council yard; grading footpath and carting and laying asphalt Park St. discharging Belmont chips from the trucks to yard and general mainlenimce work. The grading and laying of asphalt on Park St. footpath has almost been completed. Before top-dressing this, the grass at the cemetery and V ictoria Park will be cut. after which Park St. will be finished off and a start made on Cook St. footpath.—Decided to adopt report and ask road foreman to complete asphalting around hydrant. boxes. It was also decided to give Russeil St. footpath another coating of ashes. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The Works Committee recommended as follows: That the application for a permit to erect a motor ear sited in wood and iron in the No. 1 brick area be not granted; that before, commencing the work of asphalting Cook St. footpath, the balance of Johnston and Russell Sts. be top-dressed with tar; that in the opinion of the Com--1 mil tee the matter of scooping six foot ledge at the sand cutting in Avenue Rd. should be referred back to the contractor for completion. The Mayor said that he thought the asphalting of Cook St. footpath should stand over in favour of tar sealing Johnston and Russell Sis. in the meantime. The recommendations were adopted. i! LEVIN MARTON DEVIATION. It was proposed by Cr. Smith, and seconded by Cr. Ross ‘‘That the Council expresses its keen appreciation of the efforts of the LevinMorton Railway League (especially the Executive) in obtaining Ministerial consent to a survey of the proposed route being obtained, together with estimate of cost; also lor obtaining consent of the English Railway Commissioners to take evidence and inspect the proposed route; further, that this Council heartily supports them in their work and trusts that in view of the fact that the proposed deviation is a national work, their efforts will he crowned with success; further, that this Council makes a donation of £5 towards the funds of the League.”—Carried unanimously DOG TAX. It was decided that the fee for registration of dogs for 1925 be as follows: —All bona fide sheep and cattle working dogs 2/6, all others 10/-, fees to be due and payable on 3 1st January, 1925, summons for failure to comply to be issued thereafter. GENERAL. Decided that the Council hold their meetings at 7.30 in the summer months. * Decided that a fortnight’s holiday he granted Mr Reid after the holidays are over, provided he can find a substitute, Town Clerk to make reasonable arrangements for payment of same. Decided to enlarge counter opening at Town Hall shop at a cost not exceeding £2 10/-. Decided to ask water works foreman to report on the question of extending the drainage system to the end of Frances Street. It was decided that the street lighting agreement be signed and sealed in the presence of the Mayor and Crs. Bryant and Smith. The question of shifting ths existing light at the corner of Park and Jenks Sts. was brought up by Cr. Smith, who considered the light should he shifted to the corner of Victoria Park.
Cr. Ross pointed out that it would cost as much to shift the light as to instal an extra one. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee.
