RAILWAY COMMUNICATION WITH THE SEASIDE.
In reference to the agitation for railway communication with the local seaside. Mr J.Linklater, Jff.P. and chairman of the Foxtou Harbour Board, expressed the opinion that at the present time there was not sufficient inducement to carry it out. The picnic excursions alone would not be sullicient to make the line pay. “But," he added optimistically. “when the Harbour Board La> its wharves at the Heads—as it will eventually—there may be better inducement in the way of goods to and from the port to warrant the construction of the line. The Harbour Board would, of course, support the proposition if it were carried thrugh (for.it would be in its interests to do so, he body having a large amount of land there. "The competition of the motor is so strong at the.present time that 1 think it is :1 little premature to sug--gist that the railway line be extended to the beach.” The Foxton Harbour Board is making every endeavour to popularise the locality, and in addition to an area of 80 acres, recently acquired through legislation, and which will be cut up into sections later, a survey was this week made of 150 sections on the Board’s area -past the pilot station, which are now available for sale for building purposes. It is expected that there will be keen competition for these. On some of the land 20,000 trees have been planted and they arc making splendid growth and in time will afford shelter and added comfort to those visiting this popular resort.
