Smokers' heart is a distressing malady, caused chiefly through the effects of an alkaloid called nicotine, which is extremely poisonous. Strong tobacco with a high percentage of nicotine should therefore be avoided. When selecting a brand, the smoker should not lie guided by appearance alone, because even—an apparently mild cigarette tobacco nl a bright lemon colour may contain—and often does contain an excess of tiieotine. If is a peculiar fact that certain X.Z. soils produce a leaf with a very small percentage of nicotine, compared with the foreign type. Take for instance our local brands: River-head fluid, Cut Plug Xo. 10 and Toasted Navy Cut. There you have an absolutely pure article, which can be smoked continuously without the slightest after effects. It burns to the last shred, leaving - the month sweet and clean. So highly is New Zealand, tobacco commented upon by Doctors and experts that smokers should ac(jimjnl themselves with the merits of our own product, by giving the above brands a fair trial. 2 Ring out the old, Ring in the new. See \V. D. Bauckham’s advertisement, t At a. special meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, held on Tuesday evening, a report was received from Mr R. Edwards, engineer, dealing with a sewerage system for Shannon. The engineer submitted a lengthy report, on a scheme which would include in the meantime that portion of the town where the buildings are close together and such portion as are actually necessary to keep the town in a healthy state. He pointed out that to attempt to put a sewer in every street, would not be practical owing to the scattered nature of the siles of the resiliences, the cost of which to the ratepayers would be too great a burden for them to hear, it being in (lie vicinity of .CiKljtHMt. The scheme as submitted he estimated to cost approximately .07,000. It was pointed out that it would he necessary to strike a. rate of Id in the £1 if the scheme as submitted was gone on with, while a rate of approximately 4d in the £1 would have to he struck to carry out a sewerage scheme to cover the whole of the borough. The Council recognised the urgent necessity of something being done in respif t to sewerage in the closely populated nt|a and on the motion of the Mayor it was decided to call ,-t meeting of the ratepayers interested in sewerage for tile congested area to discuss the matter.
