BOOTMAKER SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS.
FOR ARSON. After having pleaded guilty in the lower Court to a charge of arson, in having set fire to a shop in Shannon in order to secure the insurance money, a young man, Walter Clifford Flogdeli, a bootmaker, appeared before Mi 1 Justice McGregor at the Palmerston North Supreme Court on Saturday for sentence. In response to His Honour’s query, the prisoner said that he had a wife and two young children who would be left penniless. He had set fire to the place on the spur of the moment, having a full realisation of his financial liabilities, and unwillingly. If he was admitted to probation, he would endeavour to repair the damage. His Honour said he regretted the poverty of the prisoner’s wife and children, but probation was quite out of the question. He impressed upon Flogdeli_the seriousness of his crime, and said he might have done a deal more damage in his attempt to s'ecure £75 from an insurance company. It was unfortunate that his wife should be left penniless but this matter would have to be taken up by the proper authorities. Flogdeli was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
