THE SHANNON BRIDGE.
The Shannon Chamber of Com-merce-is taking steps to stir up the. authorities fn connection with repairs to the Shannon bridge. At its last meeting Ah' Tippler enquired if anything was being done in respect to repairing the bridge to enable traffic with Shannon to he resumed. Air Gunning said lie had already hi ought the matter before the Mayer, who had been in communication with the TTorowliemin f'ountv Council and it had been suggested that, a temporary swing bridge be erected (o convey pedestrian- and cream across the river. It was pointed out that the matter was urgent and it was resolved that the Ilorowhenua County Council he wriite nfo asking that the fridge he restored a- early as possible. Also that the Levin and Fox(on Chatnbevs of Commerce and the Mnnawatu County Council he asked to co-operate with a view to having the bridge, restored without delav.
The missing spatt has been .secured intact some distance above the Whirokino Bridge. The lforowlienna County Engineer has made an examination of the Shannon bridge. Soundings at the bridge reveal that very extensive scouring has taken place at the scene .of the collapse, so much so as to gravely endanger the last main -pan which .joined up with the road span. A Public Works engineer has also inspected the. bridge with a view to recommending what should bo done to the structure.
