RAILWAY COMMISSIONERS VISIT MARLBOROUGH.
DELEGATION URGES COMPLETION OF MAIN TRUNK. Blenheim, Tuesday. The Commissioners who are to report on the New Zealand railway system,-Sir Sam Fay and Sir Vincent Raven, arrived from Wellington accompanied by Messrs W. J. Girling, M.P., R. W.'McVilly, General Manager of Railways, F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in.-Chief of the Public Works Department, and the heads of the various railway branches, the party with the secretaries, and officials, numbering 17. Mr Girling introduced a delegation from the Marlborough Progress League which briefly represented the League’s case for the. completion of the South Island Main Trunk railway (Picton to Bluff). The Commissioners appeared much impressed with the League’s case, and seemed to appreciate the necessity for completing the line so as to give Marlborough ah adequate outlet for its primary productions and the advisableness of filling the. gap from the national point of view. They promised to#give the ease careful consideration and expressed appreciation of the force of the argument used. They appeared to be oL opinion that the merits of the case for completion of the line were so clear that it was only’ a matter of finance.
The commissioners are on their way to Christchurch via Kaikoura.
