CARNIVAL QUEENS.
INTRODUCTORY CEREMONY. MAYORESS DECLARES CARNIVAL OPEN. A very pleasing ceremony took place in the Town Hall last night, when the Mayoress (Mrs Chrystall) severed the ribbons representing the combined colours of the carnival queen candidates and formally declared the opening of the carnival and the queen candidates were introduced. The Mayor in a brief speech, touched on the objects of the carnival and commended the promoters on their enthusiasm in aid of a deserving local institution —the Citizens' Band. He wished the promoters and committee every success. The queen candidates were then introduced in eulogistic terms. Mr Hollings spoke on behalf of Miss Kirkland (Citizens’, green and gold), Mr A. N. Smith on behalf of Miss Mavis Dunn (Fire Brigade, red), Mr Hornblow on behalf of Miss Doris Morgan (Sports, blue), and Miss Avis Satherley (Farmers', black and white). The candidates were charmingly costumed and each received a good reception. The candidates were accompanied by their respective commit lee secretaries, Messrs Portman, (Citizens'), A. Walls (Fire Brigade). C. Simmons ( Sports), and D. R. Barron (Farmers’).
Instrumental items were contributed by the Band orchestra and Band and the Levin Jasmanian Orchestra, and one-string fiddle selections by Mr C. Simmons, and vocal items by Miss Maud Elderton (Otaki), Mr Barron and Miss D. Morgan. All the items were deservedly encored. Accompaniments were played by Misses Delany and Healey. At the conclusion the Mayor paid a special tribute to the carnival organiser (Miss Healey.) anti Mr J. Golder. An enjoyable dance concluded the opening ceremony.
