OPENING OF FOXTON BREEN.

Yesterday afternoon; in ideal weather, the Foxtail Bowling- Chib’s green and croquet courts were opc.itci! by Ho president, Mr Jas. M. Barr.

The gathering was probably a record for the occasion in the history of the Club, a feature being- the. large number of lady visitors pre-

seal, a good many of whom were croquet players from adjacent clubs. 'Mr Barr, in welcoming-the visitors made .i efere/feV tu the fact of this being I lie fourteenth annual opening of l-'oxion ('hih. Proceeding, Mr Barr expressed the Club’s thanks in ilie lady members of the Croquet Club for their valuable help during last season, ami also in connection with tin first annual ball. He also thanked bowlers who had spenti onsiderable time in preparing the green for the day’s play, and he believed the green was in better condition for play this year than it had been for many years past. In this connection also be-spoke a word of appreciation of the work of the green superintendent, Air Whibley, and the caretaker, Air Craig - . Brief reference was made to last year’s Triangular contest, and the remarkably margin of one point which separated the winners (Poston Club) from tho runners-up (Shannon), Levin being only a few points behind. The speaker facetiously remarked lie believed Shannon and Levin had made up their minds io relieve Foxlon Club of tliis trophy this season, but lie assured them they would have to “go some” to attain that purpose. Alt- Thomson, last season's winner of ihe Willord Cup (hitherto a handicap singles trophy) was presented with the cup bv the I’resiilent, and congratulated oil his win. AHs Barr was called upon to i ast the first jack and Afr D. AYhibIcy. one of the oldest members of the Club, delivered the first bowl, v lien the green was declared open for play, amid applause. ATr Barr also presented the various trophies to the successful contestants of the Croquet Club last season, and play was proceeded with on the bowling green. The green was in g-ood playing order. and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent. The following are the details of play:— Shannon: Wat. torsion. A tasty afternoon tea, presided er bv ilie ladies, was dispensed and fully enjoyed by all present. At the conclusion of play. ADLillian, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the home club for the very enjoyable afternoon’s play, and after calling for cheers for the ladies. whi'eh were lustily given, also called for a similar compliment to Foxton bowlers.

The success of yesterday's opening function presages an enthusias;ic bowling season, and it was plea•diic tii note that a number of newly - circled members were present, most of whom took opportunity of being initialed into Ihe pastime. The opening day does not lend itself usually to tlic careful oversight of novice members, and yesterday was no exception to the rule, but as the regulations of the Club now definitely provide for the tutoring of novices, there should be no shortcomings in this respect now the green is open for play,
