Herbert'expressed at the Hospital Boards’ Conference lasi week. The proclamation declaring notes of certain hanks to be legal lender expires on January 1.0 next, and it is probable that legislation will be introduced during tlie present session to renew the statutory provision. Those present at last night’s Borough Council meeting were His Worship Hie Mayor (John Chrystall Esq.) and Crs. Thompson, Bryant, Smith, Parkin and Adams. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Coley, Thorpe, Walker and A. Ross. As an impression seems to be abroad that the Pox lon Motor and Engineering Co. Ltd. (in liquidation) propose closing down their works, we have been requested to give this an emphatic denial, as there is no suggestion of anything of the sort, and business will be carried on as heretofore.

The Mayor of Shannon, Mr W. Murdoch, in conversation with our representative, expressed disappointment that the Fox ton Borough Council should refuse to contribute towards the function at Shannon to celebrate the opening ceremony of the hydro-electric scheme. He concluded by stating that no invitation would be extended to Foxton Mayor and Councillors to attend the function!

Mr H. S. Powell, of llobinson St., returned to Foxton last week after a six-months trip to the Old Country and to his native Yorkshire. Mr Powell informs us that he was verydisappointed with 'the New Zealand section at the Wembley Exhibition in comparison with the Canadian and Australan displays. The general appearnce of the New Zealand scheme was disappointing. Mr Powell went Home via the Panama Canal and returned via Suez. He spent an interesting time at Gibraltar and Naples. A large number of Italian immigrants were picked up at Naples for the sugar plantations at Brisbane. Discussing immigration, Mr Powell said the class of immigrants coming to this Dominion are infinitely better than the flotsam and jelsom who arc finding thenway to Australia.

Sir Sam Fay- and Sir Vincent Raven, who have been invited by the Xew Zealand Government to investigate and report on the Dominion railways, arrived from Sydney by the Tahiti yesterday morning and were met by Mr McVilly and other prominent officials. On Saturday night a number of young men, strangers to the town, made themselves conspicuous by indulging in a little, horse-play and inharmonious singing to the accompaniment of sounds from a benzine tin. Their tactics were very discourteous to the Salvation Army. Fortunately they did not carry their pranks too for. In any case such conduct does not meet with local public approval and should they pay Foxton a visit on any future occasion it would be as well for them to remember this fact.

At last night’s meeting one of the deputation that waited on the Council from the Chamber of Commerce. used as one of his arguments for the asphalting of portion of the approaches to the town the fact that the roads were so bad that people went to Levin to shop. ITe said ho could name four or live local residents who caught the mail ( ar and went to shop in Levin rather than conic over the bad roads into town. A Councillor: Perhaps they would still go if the roads wore asphalted !
