WELLINGTON'S HOUSING PROBLEM.
SHOCKING STATE OF AFFAIRS. “So far as renting houses in Wellington is concerned,” Mr Wright, ALP., remarked in the House last night, “it is impossible. Everybody wants to sell his house and wants (o sell at a big price.’’ The member-Mayor went on to refer to the cost of houses in the city,.declaring that t he price of the most humble home would be in llie vicinity of .000 and in many cases the property would have a frontage of only 20 feel and depth of about 60ft. It. wits very doubtful if tire occurred in such ease, whether the owner could rebuild, because lie would not have the requisite air space, lu this respect Wellington was probably worse than any other ,-ily in the Dominion. People were asking £I,OOO for houses situated within a mile, and sometimes two miles of the Post Office —a house of three rooms and a kitchenette, on sections with a 20ft. frffntage and were getting it. on some system of deferred payment.
