OPENING OF MANGAHAO.
ARRANGING OF CELEBRATION
A meeting of the Shannon Borough Council and the executive of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Shannon Council Chambers on Friday evening for the purpose of making arrangements, as requested by the representatives of local bodies who recently met in Shannon to celebrate the turning on of powerat Mangahao. The secretary reported that the sum of £147 2/- had been promised to date, in response to an appeal by circular, including £25 from the Public Works Department. A number of replies b a d been received from bodies that contributions could not be made. The following committee was set up to take the banquet in hand with a recommendation to obtain prices for the catering for 180 to 200 persons. Messrs Gunning, Carter and Murray. It was also resolved that the matter of refreshments at Mangaore he left to this committee to make arrangements for, if found necessary. Messrs Andrew and Tippler were appointed to take in hgnd the children’s entertainment, it being resolved that the children be entertained
at the Domain in the morning and at a picture entertainment in the afternoon. It was also a recommendation that the teachers and school committee be asked to co-operate and to apply for a holiday for the school children on the opening day. Mr Thwaites moved, and Mr Andrew seconded, that it be a recommendation to the .Minister of Public \\ orks that the opening day take •place on a .Monday for preference or any other day than Saturday. The secretary was instructed to forward an invitation to the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Jellicoe, to attend the function. A finance committee consisting of Messrs Carter, Thwaites and Gunliing was set tip.
