FATAL ACCIDENT AT WAIPUKURAU.
TWO MEN DIE FROM INJURIES,
At 4.15 o’clock on Monday afternoon (says the Dannevirke News), an accident occurred at the new Municipal Theatre buildings, at Waipukurau, and two men, John Leslie Batson, a labourer, aged 22, unmarried, and Ferg Haswell, a carpenter. married'with four children, were fatally injured. The roof of the theatre was to be supported by steel girders of 56ft. span, and three of these had already' been placed in position. The accident was caused by one of the girders, the second to be placed in po&i Lion, failing to the ground, and carrying away a great deal of scaffolding which was beneath it, Batson was Working on the arch of the girder, and Haswell fell more than 30ft. with the scaffolding. Both men were seriously injured and removed to hospital where they subsequently expired. An inquest was opened on Tuesday and adjourned until next Monday.
