ORIGINAL POETRY.
‘•GOLD AND CLAY." The following lines have been inspired by a recent happening by an anonymous writer: — We have watched thee, Heart of Gold, Passing down the paths of old, Cheerful, gentle, kind and true, Humble, honest through and through Clean of lip and true of tongue, Soothing where another stung: Hand outstretched to help and hold Those in need, Oil Heart of Gold.
We have seen thee, Feet of Clay, Leading Heart and Will away, Leading down an easy road Needing neither spur nor goad, Fighting heart, and dragging feet, Oh, how hard! How hard defeat! Must you always have your way, Oh ye dragging Feet, of Clay? They have led thee, Heart of Gold, (Hymns are hushed, nor bell is tolled) 'through the grim and silent door; Ceased the tight for evermore, Still the heart and still the feet There before the Mercy Seat. And there bends One, loving, just, Sifting gold from clinging dust.
