TRYING OUT MANGAHAO.
TUESDAY’S TESTS. TRIAL RUN EXPECTED THIS WEEK. Furl her tests of the machinery controlling the different portions of the ATangahao hydro-electric scheme were made on Tuesday (says the Levin “Chronicle”) when the control gates on the Arapeti and Afangahao tunnels were operated, and found to be working satisfactorily. A slight hitch occurred at the Arapeti gate where the winch raising and lowering it; through the control
shaft- was found to bo working with difficulty. It was necessary to allow a certain amount of water out of Ara.peti to permit the trouble being rectified, and the contractor for the supply of the winch had to make some adjustments before everything worked smoothly. At present the water is banked up in the Mangahao dam to a height, of several feet above the level of No. 1 tunnel, being held there by the control gates. The level of the water in the dam is regulated by means of the by-pass tunnel, it being essential that it. should not, rise to a height which would endanger the work under contsruction should a Hood ocelli'. The next step in the development of the work will he the turning in of the water to the pipes. In both Mangahao and Arapeti everything is ready but some riveting in the power house, where the pipe-line connects with the turbines has caused a little delay. - '
This morning, however, providing no unexpected hitch occurred, the filling of the pipes was timed to take place. The testing out of the machinery will be. as may lie expected, a careful and lengthy prociss, but once the turbines are running it will be a matter only of a short and definite period until the “juice” is available to Horowlienua.
