Alexander Robert Kennedy, Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, pleaded guilty I<> (lie theft on April 7 and other .tales between then and August i, of sums totalling £Bl 111 li, these representing marriage entries and passport lees not, accounted for. Evidence showed that the accused hud surrendered himself and had -enl for an auditor, giving the latter a list showing the mi miters of the missing eovliltea t es. Detective Beer slated that Remised. when lie surrendered, was in a very nervous condition and described how on (wo occasions lie had made preparation to lake his lite, handing over a pea rille ami cartridges which he had intended to use. Accused’s own statement. was ilia! since being in Dunedin he had serious illness involving jlimmcial difficulties, which tempted hm to appropriate the money. lie had been transferred to Wellington and then resolved to disclose the whole matter to the Under-Secret ary. Accused was committed for sentence.
