MATERNAL MORTALITY.

Speaking on national mortality in the House last night, the Minister for Health said that the ratio of maternal deaths to births in New Zealand was had, but was not as bad as some members had tried to make out. Out of twenty countries, New Zealand stood about eighth on the list, still, that was no criterion. A voice: “What about Denmark.” The Minister: “I do not know that any Government has anything to do with the accouchement of women, but T do know this; that in Denmark they are left severely alone to let nature take its course, that they have midwives and"are not unduly interfered with by medical men. I have said before that is the trouble and I say again that that is the truth, as borne out by the very country my friend is quoting.” Afr Savage: “It; does not praise the medical men.” The Alinister: “That does not matter. AH medical men differ sometimes to the detriment of the profession.” (Laughter). Air Langstone: “The cemetery can tell a story.”
