THE HEMP MARKET.

JULY GRADING RETURNS

The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of July has been issued by the Department, of Agriculture- as follows: — Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 5,349, as compared with 3,180 for the corresponding

month last year, an increase of 2,163 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st July, 1924, 68,519 bales were graded as against 59,637 fpr (he previous 12 months, an increase of 8,882 bales. Tow. —During the month 1,246 bales were graded as against 876 in July, 1923, an increase of 370 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st July, 1924. 16,156 bales were £^i»acled as against 15,558 hales for the previous 12 months, an increase of 598 bales! Stripper Tow. —During the month 82 hales were graded as against nil in July 1923. Stripper Slips.—During the month 68 bales were graded as against six in July, 1923, an increase of 62 hales. The following is the deailed particulars of the hemp graded:— Good High Low

Seventy-four bales at Picton were graded fine. Eleven bales at Auckland, 31 at Foxton, three at Dunedin, two af Blenheim and 15 at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number ■ of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 74 (nil), good fair 401 (131) high fair 2,507 "(2,087), fair 2,171 (860), common 134 (55), rejected 62 (53), a total of 5,349 bales. The following shows the number of bales graded at each port:— Auckland 835, Foxton 1,424, Port Chalmers' 24, Dunedin 129, Bluff 245, Wairon 454, Blenheim 186, Picton 124, Lyttelton 31, Wellington 1,897. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—

Two bales at Auckland, two at Foxton and five at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales iii each grade, the .number for the corresponding period last year being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 262 (162), 2nd grade 850 (573), 3rd grade 125 (123), condemned 9 (18), a total of 1246 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port were: — Auckland 179, Foxton 2GI, Pt. Chalmers 20, Dunedin 13, Bluff 141, Wairoa 08, Blenheim 60, Picton 55, Lyttelton 2, Wellington 447. Stripper-tow: —Forty-five bales at Wellington and 28 at Wairoa were graded 2nd grade, and nine bales at Wellington 3rd grade. Stripper-slips :~rOne bale at Auckland, two at Lyttelton and eighteen at Wellington were graded \ Ist grade, 20 at Foxton, 13 at Bluff and two at Lyttelton were graded 2nd grade. Twelve bales at Bluff were passed- for export.
