MURDER CHARGE.
_♦ : BARNES ON TRIAL FOR HIS LIFE. Wellington, Last Night. .... In the charge of murder against •Joseph Barnes who is alleged to have fatally stabbed Walter John Whit 11 on .May 1, the facts adduced w'm as-telegraphed at the time of the tragedy. It was-stated in evidence that Wliiill and his wife had separated. Whal.l was not on friendly terns with Barnes as the latter had gone away with Mrs Whall and had lived with her at various times. At the time of Wliall’s death, Barnes was living with her in Wellington. Ten days before the date of the alleged crime, accused had gone to lire house where Whall and Airs Wlm 11 were living. Whall had given him a thrashing and from that time Mrs Whall left her husband, and had gone to live with Barnes. On the night of the tragedy, Whall went in search of his wife and with oihers, went to a boarding house at which Barnes was head cook. Whall and Barnes came out together, and a quarrel ensued. Barnes weiH to the house, took a knife from the plate rack, went outside, and the light was resumed. Barnes stabbed W hall iu the groin, and the latter hit-d to death. Deceased said: Tm lighting for my wife.” The case is unfinished.
