BANK CLERK AND BURGLAR.

A TTMARU INCIDENT. Timaru, Last Night. Something of a sensation was caused in Timaru to-day as the result of a report made to the police by a clerk in the National Bank of New Zealand that a burglar broke into the bank in the early hours of the morning. 'l’he clerk sleeps ini the premises. and on being awakened at 5 a.m., hurried down stairs with his revolver when a scuffle took place between himself and the intruder. The latter is said to have thrown a chair at the clerk’s head and the chair struck the latter’s revolver, causing it to go off. The intruder (lien rushed out of the hack door and the clerk fired lnit did not hit him. 'P.lie man escaped without semiring anything. The police are investigating the affair.
