CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
SUP,MIT PROPOSALS TO BO KOl’Oil COrNCIL. At last night’s Borough Council meeting a letter was rend from the lceal Chamber of Commerce making a request for a donation towards the Chamber’s expenses and •submitting ibe following suggestions tor consideration bv the ('oimeil: — ( I ) That a wafer trough be creeled at the corner of Spring Street ami the Avenue Road: (2) tlml the .juneiioii of Why te Street and Jolm--ton Street is a dangerous corner
and needs attending to; (.')) that the Ladies' Rest Room nqeds a good sign on it so that visitors to the town
and others will know that such a room i> available for their convenience: (I) that the Justice Department he approached with a view io getting n -triji of Innd from the Court House to the Town Hall for the purpose of widening the footpath so that this ground could be beautified, eli 1 .
After a short discussion on the various suggestions it was decided that the Couniil could not make any grant towards the Chamber’s funds; (1) that a water (rough he erected where suggested; (2) referred to the Public Works Committee: (3) decided to erect notice board pointing out the whereabouts of rest room at south end of Triangle. Tn connection with clause (4) the Mayor considered if was not a fair tiling to approach the Justice Department with a view to procuring the strip of land mentioned. The bell-tower site bad been granted free and the Council bad squatted on it all these years and now they were about to ask for more land. There were many more important works to he done within the borough' than the widening of the footpath, which was quite wide enough.
Cr. Ross said that he did not hold the same view as the Mayor. He believed in asking for the land. It would benefit the town and improve both the Justice Department's land and the Council’s own property.
Cr. Smith endorsed Cr. Ross’s remarks. He considered it would be very nice to have the strip beautilied and have seats there. The Mayor: It wilt he a costly business and not worth the expense. Cr. Bryant said there- was no hope of getting any more land Hiatt thnl already granted for the helllower. The footpath was quite wide enough. He was in favour of writing and asking for the use of the helltower site and beautifying that.
it was decided that the Justice Department Ik- respect fully asked to consider handing over to the town a strip of land squaring the corner at the intersection of .Main Street and Avenue Rond, the Mayor voting against.
