INCOME TAX RETURNS.
DEFAULTERS FINED
Daniel Me Taggart, a retired butcher of Martinborougii, before the Magistrate's Court at Wellington yesterday, was lined £SO for failing to furnish an income tax return. Mr J. M. Tudhopo, for the prosecution, stated that the defendant, during the years from 1018 to 1921 owed the Income Tax Department £3l-1 as money due from taxes. His return as sent in had shown income as £253, whereas on investigation it was found that it should be £4,343. Mr Scull. for the defendant stated that there was no suggestion of trickery on the part of his client, and that he had given the inspector all the assistance in his power when he came to look over his books. A week was allowed in which to pay the line. On a similar charge Alexander Dunn, a solicitor, of Wellington, was lined £lO.
