MANGAHAO PLANT.

INSTALLING THE GENERATORS

Another generator for the Maugahao hydro-electric works arrived at Shannon ’by special train from Wellington; on Saturday.

There are five of these to he fitted into .th'e power house at Mangaore —three fl f them having a capacity of .6000 k.v.a. each and the remaining two having a capacity of 3.000 k.v.a. each, this making a total of 24,000 k.v;a. Owing to the size of these machines, special arrangements for their transport from Wellington to Shannon were necessary, and alterations to railway trucks had to be made to con.vey them. The train was a “special” for the reason that there are only two inches to spare in tunnel clearance, the generators being both over-weight and above the usual guage. The rotors, or revolving portion of the alternators weigh about 26 tons each, and on arrival at Shannon were transported to their destinaton on specally constructed trucks behind two snorting traction engines at a pace little faster than, .a crawl. The total weight these traction engines have to haul is 30 tons.

Some of the generators have already been landed successfully at the power house, where upon their arrival, they were lifted with ease by the 100 ton crane and deposited vrlierever the engineer required.
