HIGHWAYS AND MOTOR VEHICLES.
Among the important measures of the coming session will lie the Motor Vehicles Bill which it has already been indicated will be introduced early, and then circularised among the bodies interested, so that ample time may lie given to digest the essential clauses of Ibis measure, which is to provide much of the finance for Ihe operation of tin- main highways scheme, and to make representations thereon. The Prime Minister has slated that the-proposed petrol tax has been dropped, so it is possible, therefore, that increased registration JVos will he provided for. The Bill will give members an opportunity of stating whether the Government or the lorn 1 bodies should handle the revenue. At the present time the position is that legislation is required to enable the local bodies to raise funds on which the Government contributions can lie based. Fnloss the matter is dealt with reasonably early in Ibe session (says the Post) it is felt, that it will not be possible for conntv councils to make liter financial arrangements in time to commence work next summer. Tlie.Motor Vehicles Bill will contain clauses to prevent the speeding evil, also a provision dealing with long-distance reliability speed contests. It is understood that the allocation of motor license fees between the two islands will be fixed according to the number of motor vehicles in each. The amount which it is expected will he secured from the registration of motor vehicles is approximately .CJ50,00(1 annually, and this will contributions from the Consolidated Fund and the Public Works Fund, as well as the money accruing from the tire lax for highways, purposes.
