BOOKMAKER’S AGENT.
WOMAN FINED TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS.
Mabel Maud Tliorbiirn appeared on remand at the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. .T. L. Stout, SAT., charged that on June 1), 1024, aixl on divers dates between May 31 and June 11 at Palmerston North being tin- owner of certain premises known as the Rialto, situated at 03 Cuba street, she did use the same as a ei*mmon gaming house. Mr Cooper appeared for the ac cu-'vl and pleaded guilty. Detective Holmes represented the police.
After hearing evidence. His Worship said that the difficulty in the way of making the fine a light one was that such agents as the accused .protected the bookmaker from the law. Such people took on the responsibility with their eyes open and must pay the penalty. “This soil of thing must stop.” said the magistrate. “However. 1 will fake into account the fact that she has been only operating for four or five months.” He added that if he were sure that the bookmaker would pay ihe fine lie would impose the maximum, hut he had to treat the case as if accused alone were concerned and lie hoped that the penalty which he would impose would have a salutary effect. A fine of £25 with costs was imposed.
