ATROCIOUS MURDER

MAORI WOMAN BATTERED TO DEATH.

MURDERER MEETS WITH FATAL ACCIDENT.

Whangarei, .Tune 9.

An atrocious murder was committed at the Waimea native settlement near Rawene, Ilokianga about two o’clock on Saturday morning. A Maori nrffhed Kuki Pene battered his wife’s skull with a stone, the victim expiring at noon. The first intimation was given to the settlement by the children of the victim excitedly crying: “Father is murdering mother, come quick.” The natives found ihe woman in a wliare in a dying condition and the bloodstained stone alongside. In the meantime Pene had disappeared. A hue and cry was raised and lie was eventually located at Rawene, where Pene had climbed a tree with a view to hiding. Finding this futile he leaped from the tree a distance of thirty feet into a shallow creek, occasioning concussion and unconsciousness. He was conveyed by train to Whangarei and expired en route at Whakapara. A post mortem revealed a fracture of the base of the skull. Jealousy is supposed to be the motive for the crime. The woman was aged about 50.
