LICENSING CASES.
PERMEATED WITH PERJURY AND LYING.
MAGISTRATE’S OUTSPOKEN
COMMENTS
Christchurch, Last Night.
“After a long succession of licensing cases,” said Mr Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today, “lam inclined to think they are permeated with perjury and lying of all kinds. T am not a prohibitionist bul that is the experience of the Court. Why should it he? It is not a dishonourable trade as far as 1 can see personally. It is allowed by the law of the country, and why should it be permeated with perjury? There seems to be something lacking. I hope when the legislature takes on the amendment of the Licensing Act, it will amend the Act to some purpose.”
Mr Mosley said in dealing with a case under notice, it was hard to understand how a man could tell lies to the police over -a few shillings. If a licensee were convicted and fined for an offence, it was not to be presumed the license would be endorsed. Convictions brought their own punishment.
