COUNTY ROADS IN THE AWAHOU RIDING.
ENGINEER'S REPORT.
Reporting on the county roads in' the Awahou Riding, at yesterday’s meeting of the Mauawatu County Council, the engineer stated that the contractor for supplying and delivering metal on the Fox tonShannon Road had not yet commenced work. The engineer delivered 200 yards of crushed metal to the Whirokino Road during the month, and this road was now in hotter order than it has been for several years. Sandon Foxton Main Road. —Several hundred yards of crushed metal had been carted and spread along the above road and it would require a large quantity of metal yet to put the road in anything like order.
Palmerston North-Himatangi Rd. —This road also required several hundred yards of metal to put it in order. Mr Drew and the engineer had had a conference with Mr Hannah, district engineer, who recently paid a visit to the county, with re- ” ferenee to the main highways. The question of road-making machinery was discussed. Mr Hannah was entirely in favour of oil fuel machines for road work and he also stated that the Fordson tractor was not suitable for hauling road material in a county as the pace was slow and the load small and were only used to advantage on short distances with light loads. For county road maintenance he was greatly in favour of the dump truck which was extensively used by the Public Works Department. Mr Hannah suggested that a road roller should be employed on every ten miles of main roads at the present time.
