FUMIGATION COSTS £SO A RAT SHIPOWNERS’ REBATE.
A new word “deratisalion” was mentioned at the resumption of the international shipping conference, and was explained as meaning the fumigation of ships every six months with tlfc object of killing rats.
The discussion showed that “deratisation” is unpopular among shipowners, and the cost often works out at £SO per rat. Tt was asserted that it cost one ship £407 to kill one rat. A committee was appointed to consider the whole question of ship sanitation. PORT FACILITIES. The conference adopted a resolution urging the abolition of policies or acts of (lag discrimiation which impeded the free flow of international commerce. A discussion on port facilities chiefly concerned delays in British ports and ended in the adoption of a resolution urging maritime nations to do their utmost to cnjmre that their seaports keep pace with the modern requirements of trade.
