DAWBERS DEFEAT FOXTON IN CHATHAM CUP MATCH.

The match to decide which team should represent Manawatu in the Chatham Cup was played on the local racecourse on Saturday afternoon. Foxton lacked three of their regular players but put up a brave tight against the more scientific and better combined players of Dawbers’ team. The combination of the latter’s forwards, especially in the sc-i-od(1 half, wlieu Travers opened up the game, was excellent. The understanding between McLeod, Chapman and Travers, backed up by Walker was particularly fine and productive of most of the goals. The Foxton goalie and full backs are to be congratulated on-never relaxing under heavy pressure and cannot be blamed for the team’s substantial defeat. The work of the rest of the team was ragged. Crowe on the left wing, and-the inside right alone showing anything like constructive play. The latter on more than one occasion had hard luck with shots that, just missed the mark with the goalie beaten. From the kick-off, Dawbers took possession and pretty play on the right wing saw the Foxton goal menaced, but a sterling defence prevailed for a time. Many promising attacks by Dawbers were spoiled over iiujividualism at this junction. Hearsey, for Dawbers, scored the first try, after two attempts. Dawbers 1 l 1 ’ox ton nil.

Foxton next took a turn. A run down the right wing brought Dawbtrs goalie into action, but without tangible result. At the other end, Tracey, for Dawbers, came into the picture and with clever work, beat Nixon and lauded a goal. .Dawbers 2, Foxton nil. (ju resuming after half-time, Poitou showed promising form but twice missed open goals with the .defence beaten. Shortly after Chapman for the visitors, beat the local goalie and registered another try. Dawbers 4, Poxton nil. Corners at either end became frequent and a free kick just outside the penalty area, spelled danger for Dawbers, but Poxton failed to make the most of it. f urther combination by the entire Dawber line saw Tlearsey hud the net once again, bringing the total s—o, at which it stood when mile was called. Mr C. W. Duncumb had charge of the whistle.
