BOROUGH COUNCIL

ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. At Monday night’s Borough Council meeting the road foreman reported as follows: — During the month of March the following works were performed by the road staff: Cleaning drains, in ' Spring, Russell, Jenks and Coley Street's and Norbiton Rd. Discharging Belmont screenings, completing tar sealing in Johnston St.; carting metal and patching ruts Sandon Rd. Russell St. and Avenue Rd, and general maintenance work. The footpaths about town have been broken up a good deal of late through the operations of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board. Now that the erection of poles is completed the damage will be made good, and this will be charged to the Board. We are waiting for more Belmont screenings to enable us to carry out the work of top-dressing in Main r St. We are quite out of metal for road repairs. Moutoa Road from the borough boundary to Nye St. is badly in need of metal. We still have 40 yards due from the county of last year’s order but we shall require four to five hundred yards in addition for this year’s working. The roads throughout the borough are

on the whole, in fair condition, but with the advent of wet weather, the f need for metal will become apparent. Would suggest that we continue with Belmont from water trough in Avenue Rd. along Russell St. to correspond with work done on Johnston St. last year. The roads altogether would be greatly benefited by the use of a grader but this will have to be left for suitable weather and preferably after metal is put on. The report was adopted and it was decided to order 400 tons of Belmont metal. ' WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT The water and drainage engineeer reported as follows : During the month the water and drainage foreman reported having carried out the following work: — Connected one householder with the high pressure water supply, flushed out three sewers, emptijm bottom tank of water tower amf filled with fresh water; stock taking and meter reading. . Pumping Station Report: Maintenance cost: Coal, 2 tons, £5 15/-, oil, 3 gals. 13/6; wages £8 7/11, total £l4 16/5. Number of hours spent pumping, 79; no. gallons water pumped, 698,000; cost per 1,000 gals., 44d. Maintenance waterworks £5 15/7; do., drainage £2 6/8/ Thirty-eight and a-half hours were spent on outside employment, producing £4 0/9. —Adopted.
