(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Your leader of April 15th is somewhat misleading* in that you state in effect that all business premises in Palmerston N. will close on Easter Saturday, whereas th« grocers and butchers will not close. A paragraph in a Palmerston N. paper reads; “The employer can only open on Easter Saturday if the employees are agreeable.” The shop assistants met on Thursday sight and decided to adhere to the obsernnce of Easter Saturday. Following this the employers met their employees and asked if they would allow them to open their shops on Easter Saturday. They replied: “Certainly not.” So the Retailers called a meeting to confirm the decision of the assistants. Too silly for words! in regard to the local mailer, the Retailers held two meetings and the difficulties arising from different awards was fully discussed and eventually it was decided not to observe Saturday this year. It is true a third meeting was called but the majority vfgre too busy preparing for the six days holiday before the end of the month that they were quiLe unable to attend. It is probable that at the annual meeting of the Retailers’ Association the I’resident will be asked to form an ees' Association in order to settle the holiday question more saUsiuctorjLty-. At this meeting 1 will divulge my name, hut meanwhile put it down to RAUPAL [SINCE the above was in print, a further meeting of the Association was held whereat it was unanimously decided to close from to-night until Tuesday morning. —Ed. H.]
