LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At last night’s council meeting, accounts amounting to £747 12/5 were passed for payment.
An alarm on the local lire hell for testing purposes will he rung a I 7 o’clock this evening.
During the month of March, 13 head of stock were impounded in the borough and driving fees to the amount of 9/- collected. Correspondence from Mr P. L. Hoi lings- will appear in our next issue, being unavoidably crowded out of this issue.
During the month of March the ranger reports having impounded four horses and two cows. Also one horse was arrested. Driving lee to the amount of 1/- was collected. Miss Sawyers, the talented Wellington soprano, will visit Foxton during the Easter holidays. Next Sunday evening she will contribute several sacred solos at the conclusion of the service in the Methodist Church.
Mr IV. P. Rollings, second son of Mr P. L. Rollings, solicitor, of Foxton, has received notice that he has passed his final law examination entitling him to he admitted as a solicitor.
• At last night’s Council meeting a motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr J. A. Smith, in their recent, bereavement.
The thanks of the Council were tendered to Mr Alf Fraser and Mr G. 11. Stiles (ex-Mayors) for enlarged photos at last night’s Council meeting.
Last night’s Council meeting proved something of an exception as far as local Council meetings go. The whole business was put forward without a hitch and the meeting terminated about 9.30 p.in. Last year’s meetings used to border round the a.m. Last night’s meeting was the annual meeting as well as the ordinary monthly one.
At the conclusion of business at last night’s Council meeting, the Mayor moved a hearty vote of thanks to the borough staff for their faithful services during the past tin - uncial year. In doing so, he said the Council was very fortunate in having such a good staff. Several other Councillors spoke in eulogistic terms of the staff.
We tried to give our assistants an unbroken holiday at Easter, but were over-ridden by the majority. Such being the case, our aim now will he to give the public some bargains. C. M. Ross Co A
The Shannon Masonic Lodge held a “Ladies’ Night’’ last night at which the lady relatives and friends of members were in attendance. The various lodges throughout the district were well represented. The W.M., Bro. Thornhill Cooper, welcomed the visitors and brief addresses on “the aims and objects of Freemason cry,” were delivered by B. Wor. Bros. J. K. Ilornblow and J. A. Nash. At the conclusion of a very impressive ceremony, those present were entertained at supper, interspersed with toasts, vocal and instrumental items, followed by a dance.
