Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 1924. EASTER HOLIDAYS AND SHOPPING.
THERE has been a conflict of opinion among 1 local business people as to the observance of holidays during Easter. An endeavour was made to observe an unbroken holiday from Thursday night until Tuesday morning, but owing to a lack of unanimity among members Saturday was not included, but in lieu thereof the drapers will close all day on Easter Tuesday. The usual half-holiday will be observed on Wednesday of next week, followed by a close holiday on Friday following (Anzac Day). Had the Association decided to close on Easter Saturday a late night would have been observed on Thursday and an unbroken period afforded employees. It is hoped next year that this will be agreed upon as is being done in PalmerstonN. and the majority of other provincial towns throughout the Dominion. The grocers’ award does not provide a holiday for Easter Saturday but the drapers failing to give a holiday on that day must substitute another day in lieu thereof. In the case of Foxton they have decided on Easter Tuesday. A special meeting of the Retailers Association to re-open the subject was convened for this morning but fell through for lack of attendance.
