BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall Esq.) and Councillors: Coley, Walker, Parkin, Adams, Thompson, Boss, Smith and Bryant. An apology for absence \uis received from Cr. Thorpe.
CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From the Bandmaster, on behalf of the Band Carnival Executive, asking the Council for the use of the Town Hall for a “Queen Opening Ceremony” entertainment, to take place on a non-picture night, some time in May.—Permission granted. From same, making application for use of old council chambers as *6. practice room. —Permission granted, when vacated, at pleasure of Council under the following conditions: No band practices be allowed on council meeting nights, Sundays or sacred holidays; the Band to pay for the gas lighting. From Messrs Ross, Rough and Co., re leases, stating that under the circumstances they are willing to an agreement to lease instead of a registered lease and considered that the costs of the transaction should be borne by the council. — Council prepared to pay two-thirds of the costs of agreements of lease and costs already incurred, amounting in all, to £lO 17/9. From W. F. McDonald, giving nolice that at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Palmerston N., ho intends to apply for an order of discharge from bankruptcy.—Received.
From H. W. Climie and Son, asking that the Council let them know (heir intentions of completing work under sewerage loan so as to allow them to make necessary arrangements well in advance. —Received. From secretary Foxton School Committee, re district high school, advising that the matter will be dealt with at the committee’s next meeting.—Received. From Secretary Foxton Racing Club in reference to an' account incurred by Council in connection with completion of title on sale of laud to the racecourse trustees and asking that the Council-liquidate the account. —Decided to refer account to Messrs Moore and Bergin for a legal opinion on same. From Masterton Borough Council enclosing following motion ipassed by that council, and asking for support in connection with same:' “That in the matter of the special rating powers on non-consumers of ricitv conferred upon Electric power Boards by an amending Act lasi session, that the Minister in charge be written f<>, and the injustice of (lie Act be brought under his notice. Further, that this resolution be forwarded to all Municipalities owning gasworks, with a request that the Council pass a resolution on the same lines, and forward to the Minister in charge.” The Masterton Council considers (he power to specially rate non-cun-sumers of electricity is most unfair, many people, for various reasons, tin uncial and otherwise, may not desire to connect up with the hydroelectric current. The amended Act empowers hydro-electric Boards to lax these people from a minimum of 5/- per month to a maximum of £3O per annum—Decided to emphatically support the remit. From the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., protesting against the dangerous state of the ramp at the Shafinon approach to the Shannon bridge and asking for co-oper-ation in getting this danger overcome. —Decided to support the request; ramp should be widened by eight feet.
- GENERAL. * Decided that the services of Mr Mouatt, as council plumber, be dispensed with and that he be given a recommendation from the Council. This step was taken owing to paucity of work now in the borough, only a few residences remaining to be connected up with the sewerage system.
In future all applications for permits for rubbish tires be made, to the Superintendent of the Eire Brigade. The consent of the Couuoil was granted to the subdivision A. K. Speirs to H. Berry, of part section 59, Thynue Street. Decided that the horse feed allowance of 15/- per week be continued’ to Mi’ Parker since the Ist April until the termination of appointment.
