UNITED SPORTS ASSOCIATION
SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL MEETING. The Foxton United Sports Association held their inaugural meeting on the racecourse yesterday in fine weather. There was a good attendance, representative of the whole district. Had the meeting been held on a public holiday the attendance would have been considerably increased. The committee is to be congratulated upon tbe excellent arrangements provided both for the public and competitors and everything went off without a hitch. The joint secretaries, Messrs Ogilvy and Rimmer, and the officials deserve special mention for the excellent manner in which they discharged their duties. The Citizens’ Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. Golder, marched., to the grounds to the strain of a stirring'march and discoursed music at intervals during the day, which was much appreciated. The spoils, as a whole, will’ justify'‘rhfe Association in developing the meeting next year. The following is a list of officials; Patron: J. Linklater, M.P., Esq.; president: W. T. The wood chopping events were the draw of the day and created a great deal of excitement, Miss Mead’s riding and jumping caused much comment and her wins were well deserved. Mr Stan. Barber bad a nasty fall at one of the hurdles. his horse tripping on (ho hurdles and throwing its rider to the ground on his face. Stan, received a bad jar but was able to walk off the field. Other than this the day was unmarred by accidents. E. Cunningham “scooped the pool” in athletic events securing four firsts and a third. At the conclusion of the high jumping he gave an exhibition jump, easily clearing the 5 foot mark. The children were especially well catered for during the day with races, scrambles, etc. and had a most enjoyable time. The gate receipts were somewhere in fhe vieinitv of .€2O.
THE DANCE. A most enjoyable dance, as a wind-up to the day’s outing was held in the Masonic Hall last night, Visitors were present from all parts r.f the district and the floor space was over-crowded. Messrs W. E. Barber and W. T. Jewell officiated as M.’sO. The catering arrangements in the hands of Mr Perreau, were excellent. During the evening the Misses Morgan contributed an acceptable vocal duet.
