THE HEMP MARKET.
MARCH GRADING RETURNS,
The grading returns for hemp, tow stripper tow and stripper slips has been issued by the Department of Agriculture for the month of March as follows: —
ITemp.—Tlie lotal number of bait's graded was 7,854 as compared with 6,744 for the corresponding month last year, an increase of 1,110 bales. For the 12 months ended the 31st March, 1924, the number of bales graded was 63,869 bales, compared with 57,958 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 5,911.
Tow. —During the month 1,751 bales were graded as compared with J.,644 for March 1923, an increase of 167 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st March 1924, tlie number of bal&s graded was 15,573 against 14,974 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 599 bales. Stripper Tow. —During the month 220 bales were graded as compared with nil in 1923. Stripper Slips.—Five bales were graded as against eight in March, 1923, a decrease of three bales. For the 12 months ended 31st March, 1924, 93 bales were graded as against 63 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 30 bales. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded: — Good - High
Seventy-two bales at Pieton were graded fine; 25 bales at Auckland 12 at Foxton, 85 at Wellington and three at Blenheim were rejected and five bales at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last vear being given in parenthesis. Fine 72 (81), good fair 1,246 (1,668), high fair 4,606 (3,798), fair 1,693 (978), common 113 (141) rejected 125 (87), condemned 5 (nil), a total of 7,854 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were —Auckland 1,746, Foxton 1608, Wairoa 160, Wellington 2,919, Pieton 93, Blenheim 198, Port Chalmers 99, Dunedin 103, Romahapa 220, Invercargill 141, Bluff 567. The following is..the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—
'fweutwruue bales . - -at Auckland, six'at Foxton and 39 at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Ist grade 317 (693), 2nd grade 1.191 (.794), 3rd grade 177 (123), condemned 66 (32), a total of 1751 bales. ~ Tile number of bales graded at each port; was: —Auckland 495, Foxton 192, Wairoa 34, Wellington 692, Pieton 55, Blenheim 44, Dunedin 33, Bluff 206. Stripper Tow. —166 . bales at Foxton and 54 at Wellington were graded 2nd grade. Stripper Slips. —Five bales at Wellington were graded 2nd grade. IfiGJi COMMISSIONER'S * REPORT.
The High Commissioner’s cable, dated tbe stb April, reads: “Hemp, Manila market, opened quiet but closed lirm and sellers inclined to hold buck. ‘«F grade, March-May shipments quoted at £3B 15/- to £3O and values. March-June shipments sold at £3O. Lew Zealand market continues quiet, values unchanged.”
