CORRESPONDENCE

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

(To The Editor). Sir,- —Business people ol' standing admit that a Chamber of Commerre is a necessity to a town or district. As proof of this we Had all the progressive business people of standing are active members of Chambers of Commerce throughout New Zealand. A Chamber of Commerce has a much wider scope of inlilience than even a borough council, and a great tminy of the progressive movements made hy local authorities are the outcome of suggestions or recommendations made by Chambers of Commerce. Citizens will realise this is especially correct in regard to our own Borough Council, Harbour Board, etc. The Government, 100, also give very earnest consideration to any matters put forward hy Chambers for it is realised (he business people are behind anv such mutter. Our own Chamber of Commerce was (be means of bringing a very important mallei - to Ibis port before Ministers only Ibis last mouth. That of getting the coal for I lie Railways shipped through Ko.xton. Unfortunately we were unable jo lie represented on that deputation to back up our view of (lie mallei', and why? Because the Chamber Imd not suttieieut funds in band to pay the expenses of a representative. Many of the business people and other well-to-do people of the town are too apathetic to their own interests; that tliev either will not join the Chamber; or they have neglected to pay up their subscriptions. Borne say “It is no good being a member. I haveH*| lime to tiMeml iueeliti{rs, ,J or “my wife won't let me.” Surely, if they cannot work in the interests of the town. I hey could pay t heir 10/0 per war, or do they expect those who give their lime in their interests to have to pay out 100. The 31st of this month is the end of our financial year, and 1 would like to ask those who wish to see the Chamber continue in existence to send along (heir ]O/(i’s. Those who are working are getting sick of carrying the burden all I lie time, and if more support is not forthcoming the question of wilding up will have to he faced. —Yours faithfully. R. Me All’RE AY. (Secretary.
