SERIOUS ACCIDENT NARROWLY AVERTED.
LITTLE BOY IN RUN-A-WAY GIG. What might have proved a serious accident was narrowly averted by the promptness of Air Cresswell and a passer-by in Main Street at eleven o’clock yesterday morning. Air Byne, accompanied by his little step-son were driving in a gig in Norbitou Road and Air Byne. on pulling up at a residence tied the horse’s head to a fence and was just preparing to chain the wheel of the gig when (he horse took fright’and, snapping the bridle, bolted down the road, knocking Air Byne flying. The horse rounded Spring Street and turned into the Avenue at a mad pace, the gig swaying dangerously. The it tie hoy scrambled on to the floor of the gig as the horse continued its course up the Avenue and into the Alain Street. Here several futile attempts were made to stop the animal and it was not realised that the vehicle contained an occupant until the animal had passed and the little hoy’s arm was seen hanging over the side. The horse decided to turn into Cook Street » hut struck tiie curbing at the corner and slipped and before it could regain its feet Mr Cresswell had it by the head and a passer-by had grabbed the child just as he fell from the trap. Pino, who was also on the scene rendered assistance and had it not been for (lie promptness of these men, the child would undoubtedly have been seriously hurt, as had the horse regained its feet before Mr Cresswell reached it’s head, the wheel would have passed over tiie child. As it was he was quite all right and didn’t have a scratch to show for his eventful trip, merely expressing the wish that he “didn’t want another ride.” Dr Wvllie was promptly on the scene and an examination soon showed that the child was unhurt. Air Byne suffered a badly bruised arm and several minor cuts as the result of being knocked down by the horse. The horse suffered a cut on the left shoulder and the gig was only slightly damaged.
