EMPIRE EXHIBITION.
WARNING TO WOULD-BE WORKING VISITORS.
VVelliugtou, Yesterday. Inquiries at various shipping ofiices in Hew Zealand and Australia plainly show that the British Empire Exhibition to he opened at London in July, is acting like a magnet, drawing people of ail classes homewards for the great fail'. There is evidence that many Hew Zealanders with insulhcient means to maintain them, have gone to the Okl Country, Several, in their eagerness to get there, having worked their passages on home liners, only to tind that they cannot get work, and they are practically stranded. “The Commissioner in London,” remarked the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. Bollard) “has cabled the Government about Hew Zealanders so situated and has asked that some timely advice bo published. Sir James Alien states that the prospects of obtaining work of any description, either in the City of London or in connection with the Exhibition itself, are exceedingly remote. It is practically impossible to arrange working passages back to the Dominion, as it is known that others in similar circumstances have expressed their intention of following the lead of those who have already reached London. It would be as well if they heeded the serious note of the High Commissioner’s warning before embarking on a journey, unless of course, they are assured of employment and mean to return.”
