MAORI CHIVALRY.
Tliai the spirit of chivalry still permeates the Maori race is shown by a letter received by the Hon. J. <l. Coates (Native Minister). “This letter.” ho said, “is from Takurua Tamam, a chief of the Ngati-Hine-kuta, a sub-tribe of the Tahoe tribe ol the Urewera country. It simply state- that he and his tribe have agreed to cut off from their laud as a scenic or other reserve, an area sufficient to enclose the site of the Orangikawa Pa, near Tatahoata, at Ruatahuna, and the graves of Captain Travers and some of Ids men, of the No. 4 Division of the Armed Constabulary, who fell in the attack against the Hauhaus in that pa in 1860. Captain Travers and his fallen comrades were buried on 9th May, 18(59, just outside the front way of this pa. On the spot, to-day stands a tall poplar tree, which was planted by the late Captain Gilbert Mair, N.Z.C.. in 1872, In mark where I lie remains of his old eomrade-in-anns, Captain Travers. were laid to rest. The donors are the descendants of some of the rebel warriors who fought against the Crown in this and now. 55 years later, we find their descendants presenting the sites of I lie graves of the enemies of their forbears to the Crown in order that the resting places and the sleep of the dead who fell there in the service of their Queen and country may he undisturbed.”
