PASSENGERS ESCAPE

CAUGHT BY SCRUB FIRE. Nelson, February 27. The mail car from Westport to Nelson was burned on Spooner’s Range late yesterday afternoon through a scrub fire in the gully, which quickly ran up the hillside, blocking progress and cutting off retreat, The flames swept across the road and caught the car, which, with seven mail hags on the windward side, was destroyed. Fortunajtely there was a small patch on the roadside to which the passengers, numbering' six!een, escaped. But for this, the consequences would have been most serious.
